Vamos A Mejorar Our Spanish in SLHS (VAMOSS) Club

What is VAMOSS?

VAMOSS is a Spanish-speaking and practice club within the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences that was founded in the BABEL Lab and is led by BABEL Lab research assistants. Recognizing that language development and proficiency requires regular practice, this club offers a supportive environment for students at all levels to refine their Spanish skills. Whether you’re a fluent speaker or just beginning, we invite you to engage in meaningful conversations and practice, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to strengthen their bilingual abilities and contribute to a more inclusive professional SLHS community.

WHY VAMOSS?

Our goal: To create a supportive, judgment free environment for regular Spanish practice and maintenance and recognizing our unique cultural-linguistic environment and community in the borderlands.

  • In 2023, 8.4% of ASHA members self-reported as multilingual service providers

  • In the same year, the Census Bureau estimated that 22.5% of the population spoke a language other than English

  • Understanding another language can help make you a better SLP or audiologist!

Some of our events!

We have planned a variety of events for the members of the club! Starting with our very informative club meeting #1 that took place in September 2024. Here are a few pictures of our events so far!
