The Psychological Toll of the Sociopolitical Climate on Hispanic/Latiné SLP Master's Students
Did you know it’s minority mental health month? 🧠 Research shows that representation affects stress, performance, and whether students stay in a degree path at all. That’s true in any space where people are underrepresented, including broader university environments. It’s true in normal times. Add in what many in our communities are facing right now, and the weight gets heavier. Speech-language pathology is no exception.
As part of our larger Diversity in SLP study, we asked students and professionals nationwide one question: With the new administration, how has your day-to-day life changed?
We are lucky to have NAU undergraduate researcher @bllagzman participating in the University of Arizona UROC program with us this summer! 🤩👏🏽 As part of her summer research, she is examining the answers to this question for Hispanic/Latiné master’s student participants. Many are presented in this carousel, in participants’ own words.
We interviewed more students and professionals than we could feature here, and we’re still working through all of their stories. This is a few of them, for now. More to come.
We’re SLP researchers, but we’re from these communities first ‼️ Our students deserve to know they’re not imagining any of this, and they’re not carrying it alone.
