Latest issue of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in the Schools (LSHSS) was published today! 🥳
This article introduces the FLiP task, a culturally responsive tool designed to better understand how bilingual children tap and use their full linguistic repertoire across Spanish and English.
Dr. Arizmendi highlights both theoretical and practical considerations in bilingual development and functional usage.
Here’s why it matters:

✨ It helps practitioners better understand how bilingual language is used in their lives
✨ It brings in experiences and situations that are familiar to students

Dr. Arizmendi here 🙋🏽♀️ As an aside, this manuscript took a VERY long journey to publish. I mean LONG. A major lesson that I learned is that there are many experts in the field who are disconnected from the lived realities of immigrant families and communities, like my own. This leads to skepticism, disbelief, and minimizing of the cultural and linguistic wealth that immigrant/bilingual communities cultivate in their day to day lives. It also underscored how minoritized scholars with these experiences and with innovative solutions are often pushed out of academia, not for lack of ability, but because of structural barriers that devalue our lived experiences and perspectives.
Let’s keep flipping the script on how we assess and support bilingual communities in our lives! We know more than we get credit for. No se dejen! Todo se puede! 🫶🏽
