Meet our stellar UROC summer scholars, Alberto Bolanos and Bella Guzman! 🤩👏🏽
This summer, Alberto and Bella dug into questions that hit close to home. Bella is a senior in SLHS and joined us from Northern Arizona University @nau_slps as part of the Minimizing Health Disparities summer program through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium! As part of a larger study, she helped with data processing interviews and was interested in examining how today’s political climate has impacted Hispanic/Latiné graduate students training to become speech-language pathologists. Only 7% of all SLPs identify as Hispanic/Latine. This number is at risk of staying the same or getting smaller if we don’t recognize the increased costs on students as a result of these external changes! 🗣️
Alberto is a U of A senior in SLHS and explored an important new research direction through his McNair summer research 👉🏽 when families in the borderlands look for autism support, whose voices actually shape the research? Too often, it’s not the Latiné families living it nor the ones from communities like ours in the US/Mexico borderlands. This puts communities at risk of pathologizing differences that are cultural and linguistic when they are made by people who do not know our communities. His project advances community based approaches with a preliminary framework that our community will help revise and shape to best reflect their needs and experiences! Stay tuned as we begin to connect with the community as part of Alberto’s honors thesis that he will be pursuing in the BABEL Lab 🤩
Naming these gaps and putting action behind them is how you begin to close them. That’s the science our team is actively set on building at the BABEL Lab 👉🏽 accountable to the communities it comes from and honest about the realities that communities face, especially when they’re studied but not heard or understood.
