"Fronteras del Lenguaje: Understanding Bilingualism in the Borderlands" Presentation by Dr. Arizmendi in Nogales, AZ!

Next week, Dr. Arizmendi will be presenting the first of a bordertown community series on her work on ‘Bilingualism in the Borderlands’ starting with her hometown of Nogales, Arizona 🇺🇸🇲🇽

Dr. Arizmendi interviewed over 100 people across the US/Mexico border, from Tijuana/San Ysidro to Brownsville/Matamoros and everywhere in between, ranging in age from 18 to 92 🫶🏽 Each story is unique, but with a common thread that draws forth the community strength and cultural-linguistic wealth in bilingual and bicultural communities. This couldn’t be possible without the fronterizo community taking the time to share their stories to be represented in science. Thanks to all who participated! ✊🏽

We are eager to share this work, motivated “porque no me creen” as certain disciplines in science have yet to understand and accept bilingual language practices in bilingual communities as prevalent, valid, and as LANGUAGE. Join us as we celebrate bilingualism, fronterizos, and community power! Todo se puede en comunidad! 🫶🏽

A big ✨ thank you to: @confluencenter and @mellonfoundation for funding and supporting this research and to @border_community_alliance for organizing, planning, and working to make this research available to our community. ✨
