Ever wonder how bilingual language develops? Or how learning and cognition may be different in bilingual brains? Did you know that there are many myths and misconceptions about bilingual development?CGSC 305: Bilingual Language & Learning unpacks the stages, science, and lived realities of bilingual development. We’ll explore how the brain processes multiple languages, how learning can look different for bilingual brains, and what it all means for schools, broader social systems, and the work we do with people.


In this course you will:

🧠 Learn how attention, memory, and meaning work across languages and in learning
🗣️ Understand how bilingual development happens and what processes can support learners and speakers of multiple languages

✊🏽 Learn strategies to communicate the facts and break down myths about development

🌎 Develop a local lens with Spanish-English borderlands language emphasis, a national lens on bilingualism, a global lens on bilingual processing, and interdisciplinary perspectives on human development

📚 Understand how disabilities present differently in children and adults 💡 Perfect for future educators, medical and healthcare workers, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, public health and service — or anyone who works or plans to work with people!
