Social determinants of health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that have a significant impact on our overall health. By considering SDOH, healthcare providers across all fields can better address the unique needs of their patients and advocate for policies that promote health equity. 🫶🏽
In disciplines that include speech, language, and hearing sciences, these factors are crucial. For example, a child’s access to early childhood education (a SDOH in the education domain) directly impacts their language and literacy development, or an adult with language barriers in health communication with providers and access to resources. Understanding SDOH is crucial for addressing health inequities and promoting health and social justice for our communities. 🗣️
