Happy Deaf Awareness Month! ❤️🤟

Happy Deaf Awareness Month! ❤️🤟
Did you know that about 11 million people in the US consider themselves to be deaf or have serious difficulty hearing?
The month of September is an opportunity to celebrate the culture, achievements, and language diversity of the Deaf community. Shoutout to our brilliant undergraduate researcher, @katherine.berntsen for her work 🤩👏🏽
Culturally responsive care starts with respecting how people choose to communicate and using accessible tools when possible.
As professionals in the field of speech, language, and hearing sciences, it’s important to recognize how deficit-based perspectives can shape how we understand d/Deafness. Instead of viewing hearing and communication differences as something that needs to be ‘fixed’, we recognize Deaf community, identity, and languages as strengths.
How do you plan to challenge deficit perspectives about d/Deafness in your field? 🧐 🧠
